Steelix Waffle: Opinions on IronTail + Earthquake ?

So...finally evolved my 91% Onix last night,

I found my 2nd metal coat yesterday (3rd in total, already done Scizor)...and figured i cant wait any longer, already been waiting for awhile due to 'save le candiez m8'

But I mean...best case scenario they do half candy evolves (which if being realistic...is a real long shot right?)...and i would have saved what ? 25 Onix candy...no big deal

I am still holding off on the 'big' evolves just in case such as Dragonite (and Tyranitar once i get a good iv one -_-)

Anyway, yeah...the moves:

it got Iron Tail and Earthquake.

What is the general opinion of this moveset ?

I gotta say...i am pretty happy with it actually, I hoped for Double Steel moves, IronTail + Heavy Slam. But I think IT+EQ is the next best thing I would have wanted. I Definitely could have been more disappointed.

,
I notice on this site, Its A for offense, but its actually rated the worst defensive moveset ? Which I wouldn't have really expected. Ya know...earthquake would be good vs any fire types trying to counter him and stuff, gets stab etc

However on other sites its actually rated the best defensive,

(most likely only based on straight dps numbers tho)

Honestly, a fantastic movesett for Steelix. Exactly what I want when I evolve unless I get IT / HS. The only issue is that EQ is a full bar move so it's a chance that a defensive Steelix won't even be able to use it in battle. For type coverage it's pretty good though.

Offensively an amazing move combo, I'd be happy with it and use it as a prestiging mon. Would wreck a Tyranitar

yeah the one bar thing is a good point.

But who better to last long enough to get a one bar move off in a fight, than a Defensive beast such as Steelix ?

I need to try him out anyway, see how it feels :D

A few problems with EQ Steelix. Against his worst matchups he can just barely get off a single EQ if any. Only the bulkiest mons like Snorlax, blissey, and vape take advantage of full bar defense moves.

Having a double weakness to exploit and no multi bar move to fear dodging makes him much easier to spam to death.

Also high level players have grown accustomed to steamrolling gyms with dragonites and Steelix is a real nuisance for them. EQ is NVE against them.

Of all the new mons from gen 2 Steelix is my favorite defender. His CP is misleading, all of his movesets are good, rare to see in gyms.

Im hoping with the gym re-balance there will be some sort of 'Defence Rating', ranking the placement in the gym lineup, instead of highest CP, or atleast in combination with CP.

Meaning someone like Steelix will be very good in gym defense, as he should be !

Sorry I meant attacker resisting while defender taking SE. Was thinking of scizor's fire weakness, haven't slept in awhile. A gym rebalance would be fantastic, Steelix is the only new mon I have maxed out. Would love to see Steelix more relevant in the meta.

Ah ok xD

and Yeah. Definetly. Theres no reason for his CP to be so low tbh.

I would personally prefer either of the Heavy Slam sets (Iron Tail / Dragon Tail) just because Steelix will have trouble getting off EQ in its worst matchups. Not a bad moveset, but I don't think it's optimal.
