The Greedy Gluttons event is here, and it's got a bit going on! The appropriately named debut event for none other than the Ultra Beast Guzzlord, Greedy Gluttons puts an emphasis on Pokemon known for their tendency to go a bit overboard when it comes to self-indulgence. We've got a number of Pokemon to cover here, but note that we will not cover our current Tier 5/Mega bosses, as we already have an entire article devoted to that:
The Important
Gible
- Sources: 7km Eggs
Garchomp is a great Pokemon. It's a great Dragon attacker, one of the best Ground attackers, a good Master League pick and it also has the added value of having an an obscenely strong Mega Evolution to look forward to. It's not a huge stretch to say that every player should have at least one Garchomp raised for its various benefits, so it might be worth aiming for some 7km eggs and doing some walking if you don't already have at least one ready to go.
Munchlax & Snorlax
- Snorlax Sources: Wild, Raids
- Munchlax Sources: 7km Eggs
Snorlax is the original bulk-master of Pokemon Go; able to tank hits surprisingly well and keep going. It has great utility in the Master and Ultra Leagues, a bit in the Great League as a niche pick, and it's also an outstanding defender for those who still raise Pokemon specifically for that.
Munchlax, meanwhile, is baby-Snorlax, so getting one is basically the same thing as getting a Snorlax for all intents and purposes, but it also has some utility in-and-of itself in the Great League, so this is another reason to aim for 7km Eggs. also worth mentioning that this event marks the grand debut of Shiny Munchlax, so best of luck with your hatches!
Lickitung
- Sources: Wild
Lickitung remains a bit of a staple in the Great League, where its bulk, typing, and moveset allow it to win several key matchups and shore up potential team weaknesses. This is one of those must-haves for a lot of players, so finding them in the wild is always a great opportunity. Lickilicki, meanwhile, has an outstanding presence in the Ultra League in particular, making it valuable in its own right as well.
Swinub
- Sources: Wild, Raids
Another of the real classics of the game, Mamoswine has a great presence in PvP and Raids alike, with its powerful and pervasive Ice Type attacks carving a very strong niche out for itself. It's hard to go wrong raising a Mamoswine, especially if you need more Ice in your team!
The Good
Pelipper
- Sources: Wild
Pelipper has a bit of utility in the Great and Ultra Leagues, but sadly not a huge amount. It can fill in for team weaknesses pretty well, and can definitely handle some major threats with ease, but it also isn't universally-useful and has direct competition in Mantine. It's a good Pokemon, but not must-have.
Golbat
- Sources: Wild
Golbat is one of those Pokemon; the kind that tends to overshadow its evolution a bit. While Crobat has a higher stat total, this does it no favors due to the fact that it's still woefully under-powered for any game mode that would actually utilize these stats, while Golbat has what is arguably a better moveset for the Great League. That's not to say that Crobat is useless, just that it definitely has strong competition with its pre-evolution... and neither tends to be super-useful outside of limited cups, for the most part.
Mawile
- Sources: Raids
Mawile is another niche Pokemon in PvP, but more than that it's one of the lucky few Pokemon that can look forward to a Mega Evolution in the future. True, it's not the best Mega in the game, but its unique Steel/Fairy Typing makes it useful for candy farming to say the very least.
Cherubi
- Sources: Field Research, 7km Eggs
If you're hatching for Gible and Munchlax, then you'll probably hatch a few of these little guys along the way. Cherrim - Sunshine Forme has utility in the Great League as a Grass Type with access to a powerful Fire Type move in Weather Ball Fire. It might be worth farming for a good one!
Gulpin & Swalot
- Gulpin Sources: Wild
- Swalot Sources: Wild, Raids
While not the best Pokemon, Swalot actually has a bit going for it thanks to its high bulk and good coverage in Ice Beam. It works especially well if you're having trouble with Grass Types in the Great League, but it's also not the best option for that niche. Still, it's a solid option to have ready for a lot of Great League teams!
Alolan Rattata & Alolan Raticate
- Sources: Wild
Alolan Raticate has one job; to destroy most Ghost or Psychic Type Pokemon in the Great League. It's been useful in cups in the past, so having one for your team can't hurt. Still, it's definitely not a huge priority.
Mankey
- Sources: Raids
A decent Great League Pokemon, Primeape is fast and furious. It's also here because rumor has it that the future may be bright for everyone's favorite angry furball.... having a few good and unevolved Mankey may be in your best interest, but time will tell on that front.
The Others
The above Pokemon are available via various sources during this event, but none are extremely important. Some of these Pokemon or their evolved formes do have utility in various game modes, but in general they're not worth going too far out of the way for. But on that note, we do live in an age where Pokemon can get new evolutions or alternate formes at any time, so a bit of collecting never hurts!
General Priorities
- Take advantage of the Hatching Widget to get 1/2 hatch distance. 7km eggs have a few good options available, so this is a great time to go out and walk for some high-IV Pokemon returns.
- Figure out your main goals and adjust your gameplay accordingly. This event has a few good Pokemon to pick from, so trying to focus on the ways to obtain your goals will definitely help out.
- Remember that it's possible to solo Guzzlord if you have a good team ready. If you're not focusing on other raid-exclusive Pokemon, this may be a really good way to spend your daily passes!
Closing
The majority of the Pokemon on offer have a PvP presence more than a PvE presence, so this is definitely a major opportunity for anyone currently lacking bulky Normal Types for the Great League in particular. The bonuses on offer are a bit lackluster, but at least the spawns have some potential utility, with a few of them being semi-rare as an added bonus!
