Overview

Guzzlord is one of the more iconic Ultra Beasts from Pokemon Sun/Moon, sporting one of the most over-the-top designs in the greater Pokemon franchise. It's also one of the perfect storms when it comes to a soloable Tier 5 raid bosses, as most of its bulk comes from its titanic HP which does not matter in raids, and it also sports a double weakness. Overall, it's not too hard to make this gluttonous behemoth scream.

Approach

Team composition

  • Fairies and Fairy Type movesets are the key to victory here. Try to have your counters at least Level 35 if possible.
    • While a few non-Fairy Pokemon from other types can break into Solo-level DPS, they all fall short of the top Fairy Types.
  • Most of the top counters for this raid have an average DPS well above the 50 DPS solo-level, so focusing on TDO more will tend to make this battle easier to manage as to avoid needing to relobby multiple times.
  • Beware the power of Sludge Bomb! This move has a 25% chance of showing up as the Raid Boss's charged move, and it can ruin Fairy Types pretty easily by comparison to the far less threatening other options at Guzzlord's disposal.

Dodging Strategy

With optimal counters, DPS shouldn't be a problem. However, most of Guzzlord's attacks aren't that threatening to most counters and they tend to come out very quickly, so dodging should really only be attempted to avoid fainting when close to your next Charged Move. The variable here is Sludge Bomb, which should definitely be dodged when possible.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Gardevoir Mega Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite having a Psychic sub-typing to remove Fairy's Dark Type resistance, Mega Gardevoir is a wrecking ball of a Pokemon that absolutely destroys Guzzlord with ease. Sitting atop the DPS and TDO charts easily, this is definitely the counter to bring to this raid.

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Diancie Mega Diancie
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While definitely below Mega Gardevoir on the DPS chart, in part due to its lack of a Super Effective Fast Move, Mega Diancie still hits like a truck and severely threatens Guzzlord's time on the field. While it will need a bit more team-support than the big-gun above, it's still a great pick for the solo.

Mega Rayquaza Mega Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite the lack of the all-important double resistance to Dragon Type moves and a lack of the even more important ability to deal double-super-effective damage, Mega Rayquza's sheer raw power pulls it into our recommended counters here. It's honestly very comparable with  Mega Diancie, even out-DPSing it in many cases, but it doesn't have quite as many resistances to give it the average TDO depending on the moveset.

Supreme Counters

ShadowGardevoir Shadow Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Gardevoir has a DPS total that's well over 1.5x what it needs to be solo-worthy in this raid, and also has a very solid TDO to boot. If you have one or more raised, this is the Pokemon to make Guzzlord easy-mode, as it allows you to fill the rest of your team with tanky counters and still finish the solo comfortably. Just watch out for Sludge Bomb and remember that Shadow Gardevoir does not resist Dark Type movesets due to its Psychic sub-typing.

Togekiss Togekiss
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite being a low-priority raider who's generally used to fill in if you lack better counters in most cases, Togekiss is an absolute super-star here! It has solo-worthy DPS and a TDO that beats out every other option, meaning it can sit quietly and take advantage of its outstanding bulk and resistances and keep you in the battle while still doing enough damage to beat the clock. Togekiss is definitely a priority for this raid!

Zacian Zacian - Hero of Many Battles
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Even though it lacks a Fairy Type fast move, Zacian - Hero of Many Battles is actually surprisingly bulky and strong, putting it near Togekiss as a tanky counter with DPS above solo-level. If you already have one for the master League, then throw it in here as well!

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite being a budget pick, Sylveon is another bulky counter with DPS that makes a solo possible. Players who don't have many resources will want to focus on Sylveon for this raid due to its availability, though evolving them for these raids will take time due to the annoying evolution-requirement. Hope that you already have one or two ready, and/or have the Nickname trick still available!

Good Counters

Gardevoir Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While not as dominant as its Shadow forme, Gardevoir is still a capable attacker for this raid that sis well above Solo-range.

Shadow Granbull Shadow Granbull
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Basically diet-Shadow Gardevoir with an actual Dark Type resistance.

Xurkitree Xurkitree
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

If you want context as to just how absurdly high Xurkitree's Attack stat is, here we have it using a not-very-effective Fast Move and a non-STAB Charged Move and it's still one of the better counters in this raid. Let that sink in for a moment.

Shadow Salamence Shadow Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

it feels genuinely odd to see Shadow Salamence this low on one of these lists, especially when its competition is all Fairy Type. It's viable and is a near-optimal counter when it's Windy, but in general it falls a bit short here.

ursaring Shadow Ursaring
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Yes, it's an oddball pick. But also yes; it is indeed effective!

Tapu Koko Tapu Koko
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Solid, though not particularly note-worthy.

Primarina Primarina
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

It's probably best to not raise one specifically for this raid, as it will inevitably get Hydro Cannon during its own Community Day some day.

Shadow Dragonite Shadow Dragonite
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Just copy-paste Shadow Salamence with a bit less DPS and a bit more TDO.

Glass Counters

Shadow-Alakazam Shadow Alakazam
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Same story as Mega Alakazam, but even less DPS and TDO to work with.
