Overview

Kartana is a highly valuable Pokemon, so most players will definitely want to add it to their team. Well, it's actually not terribly hard to do so, as this is a Pokemon with lower base Defense and a double-weakness to one of the game's more potent types; Fire. This is going to be a fairly easy duo for most players, and even a reasonable Solo if the weather is Sunny. In fact, many of the top Pokemon on this list are actually solo-viable should you face Kartana under clear weather.

Approach

Team composition

  • A combination of any of the top Fire Types can borderline trivialize this fight.
  • Two players sporting a team consisting of nothing but Mega Charizard Y or Mega Blaziken and a bunch of Max Revives should be able to burn this origami razer to ash in no time.

Dodging strategy

  • Kartana is fully loaded with 3-bar moves, so expect a torrent of charged moves that starts early in the game. Most of these moves are hard to dodge too, so it's probably best to just power through.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Charizard Y Mega Charizard Y
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite not having quite the same DPS of Mega Blaziken, Mega Charizard Y is still very much an optimal counter, especially against Grass movesets which it double-resists. In general, Mega Charizard Y will stay a bit behind Mega Blaziken, but its TDO will tend to be substantially higher.

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: None

Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

When it comes down to sheer DPS, nothing on this list can quite match Mega Blaziken. It sports a great mix of DPS and TDO that can make this raid borderline trivial.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x),Night Slash

Weaknesses: Air Slash, Aerial Ace

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Houndoom Mega Houndoom
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Despite not being anywhere near as strong as Mega Charizard Y or Mega Blaziken, Mega Houndoom is a solid budget-Mega with good overall performance. It also has the advantage of resisting Night Slash, which is pretty rare among Kartana's top counters. Prioritize the two big-names, but Mega Houndoom is a fine backup.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, Night Slash

Weaknesses: None

Primal Groudon Primal Groudon
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While Primal Groudon has the potential to dwarf every other Fire Type in the game, its moveset holds it back. So why is it on this list, especially with a neutral-damage fast move? Because its presence on your team automatically boosts the rest of the team, meaning it's a great option if you're not planning on bringing any other Mega Evolutions along to actually fight.

Strengths: X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Mega Charizard X Mega Charizard X
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

No, you mis-tapped. De-Mega your Charizard, then go back and tap the button that says "Mega Charizard Y".

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Supreme Counters

ShadowMoltres Shadow Moltres
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The shadow-variant of one of the original Legendary Pokemon, Shadow Moltres continues to remain relevant despite its heavy competition. With the one of the highest average performances among non-Mega Pokemon, Shadow Moltres is definitely worth a raid spot!

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: None

shadow darmanitan Shadow Darmanitan
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Darmanitan is a power-house, and is a great option to run a Kartana solo. While not many have this burning ape as of this writing due to how new it is, it's still likely to be a top-tier Fire Type for a long time, so don't hesitate to invest!

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Reshiram Reshiram
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Finally leaving the Shadow Realm for a moment, Reshiram is the dragon of Truth, and it truly does pack a punch. Its high power, great moveset, and outstanding typing means that it's easily one of the absolute best options for this raid, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the top Shadows due to its sheer fiery fury.

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Shadow_Blaziken Shadow Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While definitely on the frail side, Shadow Blaziken still manages to hit very hard and earns itself a place on this list.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: Air Slash, Aerial Ace

shadow_chandelure Shadow Chandelure
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Chandelure's Ghost typing isn't extremely helpful for this raid, especially when Night Slash shows up, it's still perfectly fine, and makes X-Scissor that much easier to deal with. Regardless, Shadow Chandelure is outstanding in its own right.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: Night Slash

ShadowCharizard Shadow Charizard
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Even when not Mega Evolved, Charizard finds a way. While less powerful than Shadow Moltres, Shadow Charizard sports a very similar overall performance, and is a great option in-and-of itself.

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: None

ShadowEntei Shadow Entei
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The age-old debate of Moltres Vs. Entei seems to have finally ended, but Entei still rises at any opportunity to lite the world ablaze. In particular, Shadow Entei can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with pretty much any of the above counters, though this is one time that its mono-Fire typing comes at a cost, as it doesn't have a double resistance to Grass Type attacks.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Heatran counters Kartana hard. It resists all of the origami Ultra Beast's moves save Night Slash, and even double-resists the majority of its moveset. On top of that, it hits really hard thanks to Magma Storm, making it an outstanding counter for this raid.

Strengths: Air Slash, Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor (2x), Aerial Ace

Weaknesses: None

Shadow-Ho-oh Shadow Ho-Oh
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While it can't quite hit as hard as Shadow Moltres, Shadow Ho-oh has huge survivabilty that can see it through duo runs easily. Apex Shadow Ho-oh with Sacred Fire+ is the ideal choice here, but the vanilla flavor with normal Sacred Fire is still outstanding.

Please don't purity your Apex Shadow Ho-oh!

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: None

Good Counters

Shadow Typhlosion Shadow Typhlosion
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

That's right, Shadow Typhlosion breaks into our Supreme Counters! While a bit less powerful than the above, it still has all of the power that it needs to burn Kartana to a crisp.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Shadow Infernape Shadow Infernape
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While easily overlooked, Shadow Infernape is genuinely a good Fire Type that can put in the work.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x), Night Slash

Weaknesses: Air Slash, Aerial Ace

Volcarona Volcarona
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The Solar Moth itself, Volcarona counters Kartana's Grass Type movesets hard, but doesn't really appreciate its Flying Type moveset. Regardless, it's still a great option!

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor

Weaknesses: Air Slash, Aerial Ace

Shadow Magmortar Shadow Magmortar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

..how does it punch without hands? I guess that's one of the great mysteries of Pokemon!

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

ShadowArcanine Shadow Arcanine
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Often overlooked, but still a perfectly fine pick here.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Darmanitan Darmanitan
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Yet another vanilla Fire Type, and still very viable for the Duo.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

ShadowHoundoom Shadow Houndoom
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A bit frail, but the resistance to Night Slash can be handy.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, Night Slash

Weaknesses: None

Blaziken Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Watch out for Flying Type movesets!

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x), Night Slash

Weaknesses: Air Slash, Aerial Ace

Chandelure Chandelure
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Doesn't care for Night Slash.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: Night Slash

Shadow Salamence Shadow Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Even going off-type with an objectively bad Charged Move, Shadow Salamence still has the raw power to be good here.

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

See also: Blaziken.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x), Night Slash

Weaknesses: Air Slash, Aerial Ace

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Sure, Sacred Fire++ is objectively an amazing move, but if you have that then that means that you purified your Apex Shadow Ho-oh.... please tell me that you didn't purify your Apex Shadow Ho-oh.

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor (2x)

Weaknesses: None

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Welcome back to 2017!

Strengths: Razor Leaf (2x), Leaf Blade (2x), X-Scissor (2x)

Monkey no like Flying Type movesets.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor (2x), Night Slash

Weaknesses: Air Slash, Aerial Ace

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

It's honestly getting hard to say anything useful about mono-Fire types at this point.

Strengths: Razor Leaf, Leaf Blade, X-Scissor

Weaknesses: None

Charizard Charizard
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Gamefreak loves it, Niantic loves it, and it's on this page in 4 different flavors. Props if yours has a hat!

Yes, Kartana is so weak to Fire that even Flareon gets invited.
