With the Season 9 GO Battle League update in Pokemon GO, Cofagrigus is now a meta threat in the Great League and one of the best Pokemon in the Ultra League. The guide below should help you pick the best possible Cofagrigus to build in either league. This guide will also help you know which IV spreads to keep an eye out for when Yanmask and Cofagrigus presumably return for Halloween.
The guide below highlights the best IV spreads, but there are some Cofagrigus that meet the highlighted Atk/Def/HP cut offs outside of them. If you want to check the true stats of your Pokemon, use PvPoke.com or the GO Stadium IV Checker.
If you’re unfamiliar with PvP IVs in general, check out this video.
Great League
Cofagrigus is the type of Pokemon where the best IV spreads (Rank 1, 0/11/14, and Rank 2, 0/15/11) have a significant gap in stat product compared to most other Pokemon. As such, the Ranks 1 and 2 should be the goal. Should you not have the Rank 1 or 2, there are some Atk breakpoints you can hit to give you a slight edge in some specific matchups.
Before thinking about Atk breakpoints, you should make sure your Cofagrigus meets the minimum Def of ~162-164.56 and HP check of 106-108. The Def check helps avoid breakpoints from a handful of matchups, most notably Air Slash Mandibuzz. Def higher than 166.7 can help avoid breakpoints from XL Azumarill, but it is very likely Azumarill will have a higher Atk stat so it isn’t as worth chasing that Def as it is to get higher HP. The HP check helps for general consistency and has notable matchup advantages against Shadow Victreebel (106+), Sableye (107+), and Skarmory and Melmetal (108+).
After your Cofagrigus meets the minimum Def and HP stats, then you can start looking at Atk breakpoints. Reaching an Atk stat of roughly 111.32 can net Shadow Claw breakpoints against Pelipper, Tropius, and a Dark Pulse breakpoint on Vigoroth. If you shoot a bit higher, 111.6+ can potentially get a breakpoint on Mew. None of these breakpoints significantly impact these matchups, but are nice consolation prizes for not having the Rank 1 or 2.
There are roughly 68 different IV spreads that meet the Atk, Def, and HP checks noted above. The table below highlights the Ranks 1, 2, and the Top 19 of the Atk weighted Cofagrigus sorted by Def.

156 | 1/2/11 | 111.71 | 162.8 | 110 |
The Azu Slayer
The Rank 256 (0/14/0), Max Def Cofagrigus stands out from the pack as it has the most consistency against Azumarill. With its omega high Def stat of 172.6, it can avoid Azu’s Bubble Breakpoint against Atk stats as high as the Rank 1 level 40 Azumarill. If the Azu’s Atk stat is greater than that, then it is likely that Max Def Cofagrigus will get an Atk breakpoint on the lower Def Azumarill, keeping the matchup in its favor.
Bear in mind that this Cofagrigus will have an HP stat of 103, making it less consistent in most other matchups. If you find yourself with the Max Def Cofagrigus, it’ll be up to you to decide if the benefit against Azu is worth it or not.
Ultra League
As with the Great League, the Rank 1 and 2 Cofagrigus stand above the rest. Between them, the Rank 2 is technically “better” as it has a higher Atk weight for CMP (charge move priority) in the mirror. At the moment, there is only one significant Atk breakpoint identified on Alolan Ninetales and it is easily missed if the Ninetales is bulky enough. As a result, bulk and CMP in the mirror is the name of the game with Ultra League Cofagrigus.
The table below highlights the Top 20 Cofagrigus for the Ultra League. Given how tricky the mirror can become with Shadow Ball and Dark Pulse, it isn’t 100% clear if higher bulk or higher Atk is necessarily better. All the highlighted spreads are good, but it should be noted that the Rank 22’s lower Def can be risky. Priority should be Rank 2 > Rank 1 > The other 17 > Rank 22 > Any other IV spread

It’s worth noting that Cofagrigus currently has no coverage against Dark-type Pokemon. Before making the dive into XL Cofagrigus, it may be a good idea to hold out and see if Shadow Cofagrigus (and therefore, Return on Purified Cofagrigus) comes this Halloween. If it doesn’t, then it is likely that it’ll be at least a year until Shadow Cofagrigus comes to Pokemon GO.
Closing
At the time of writing this guide, Yanmask and Cofagrigus aren’t spawning in Pokemon GO as they are typically Halloween Event spawns. This guide should help you pick out a good Cofagrigus for Great League between the splits you have now, and will be ready for Cofagrigus spawns in the future. Make sure to save this page for when Cofagrigus returns!
