Poliwag!!!

Hi, I live in Riyadh, Saudi arabia and water types are nonexistant here, so imagine my surprise when i found a poliwag, my favorite pokemon of all time. I mean it has to be one beastly poliwag for surviving the intensely hot and dry climate here right???? It literally made my day when I found it. I read some stuff about ivs here and how they measure a pokemons strength. If so my poliwag has to be off the charts!!! I tried to calculate it myself but was so confused. There are so many variables and I'm not sure i completely understand all the equations. Can someone please help me check the ivs of my poliwag? I can't wait to show it off to all my friends!!

I hate to be the barer of bad news but your Poliwag has 0% IV!. GET IT SOME WATER! That is the worse on any pokemon I have seen yet and is pretty impressive in itself.

Thank you, but its my 1st Poliwag and no matter how weak, I can't hope to become a pokemon master if I just abandon my pokemon. I will power it up and battle with it side by side and even if we lose, I'll have the comfort of knowing that we tried our very best.

Even those that know how IV's are calculated must use an IV calculator, save in odd cases.

Your Poliwag does indeed have 0/0/0 IV's. I'd transfer it, because if you come across any other Poliwag it's got a 3374/3375 chance of being better barring consideration of moves. In this game, you can think of pokemon species as an aggregate, such that the best specimens you may encounter and capture represent them all, as, technically, you don't "train" your own pokemon, and you only level them up in relation to how many others of the species you've acquired, unless you get that pokemon from an egg and obtain all the candies you need with one hatch.

On that last note, even in Saudi Arabia if indeed Water types are rare, you should be able to get Poliwag from eggs, and even easily at that. An egg-hatching regimen may be a pain though if indeed it's so hot and dry there (that said, when I go Go, you should see the sweat I generate).

Basically, to explain IV's and CP:

Each of a pokemon's attack, defense, and stamina/HP stats is equal to the sum of both its base amount for that stat plus its IV for that stat, this sum being then multiplied by its "CPM", or "CP multiplier", which is a fixed number <1 that is common to all pokemon of the same level.

A pokemon's base stats are common to all members of the species, while each pokemon has an IV between 0 and 15 for each stat (i.e., an "individual value") that adds to its base amount by that amount. Again, this is prior to CPM, which at level 40 is ~.79, so the true effect of IV's is scaled down, such that a difference between your Poliwag at level 40 and a perfect Poliwag at level 40 is 12 attack, 12 defense, and 12 stamina/HP.

"CP" then aggregates the three stats post-CPM. It weighs the attack stat most heavily. You'll never be told your pokemon's attack, defense, level, or any of its IV's: you'll only be told its max HP, the sort-of-fictional CP (which yet determines gym roster order and is helpful in reverse-engineering a pokemon's level and IV's), and what it costs to level a pokemon up (also very useful in reverse engineering a pokemon's level and IV's).

I have a strong suspicion that he is having a laugh and knew his poliwag had 0 IV lol.
