Mareeps, churches and lols

So I know some pokestops spawn certain Pokémon or types. I'm in a desert biome but fountains are always teaming with water and grass types that aren't found elsewhere
But I'm on the outskirts of Salt Lake City, where maybe one third of pokestops are LDS churches. Those are the only places mareep appear for me!!! Is this a thing? Has anyone else notices high spawn rates of mareep around churches? It's highly amusing
