Question Regarding Pokecoins?

I have learned that you get 10 pokecoins for taking over a gym and control it for 21 hrs.
But recently after i attacked a nearby gym i got 10 pokecoins and 500 stardust immediately after tapping the shield icon.
So my question is just by defeating and placing your pokemon gives you pokecoin immediately or you have to wait for 21 hrs for them to generate coins for you?
