Overview

Latios flew into raids at the beginning of April 2018 for half of the world, and many trainers welcomed the shift after 2 weeks of large Lugia groups. While hardcore players raced to duo it in windy weather, less dedicated players found it a pretty feasible 3 man regardless of weather boost.

In windy weather, most of the best Latios counters grow stronger. But beware: Dragon Claw and Psychic hit very hard when boosted, so expect to burn through some Revives.

Approach

Team composition

  • Shadows such as Salamence and Dragonite top the list of DPS options and can help to beat the clock

  • Rayquaza and Salamence are dominant; Haxorus, Garchomp, Palkia, and Dragonite are fantastic all-around fillers.

  • Darkrai, Tyranitar, and Mewtwo do very well vs. Psychic, but aren’t quite as fast

  • Dialga mixes solid DPS with outstanding TDO and can help keep from needing to relobby

Battling strategy

  • Re-entering is necessary; Dragon Claw may require multiple re-entries

  • Dodging Solar Beam or Psychic can benefit the highest DPS counters

  • Revive Rayquaza-heavy squads mid-battle; create B teams otherwise

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Counters
Rayquaza Rayquaza
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • The highest DPS vs. Latios; is an overall superior counter

  • Many players have one, as it was a former tier 5 raid boss

Cons:

  • Low candy accessibility due to legendary Pokemon status

  • Fragile vs. Dragon Claw movesets; burns through Revives

Salamence Salamence
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

Cons:

  • Prone to wasting energy due to using 1 bar charge move

  • Fragile vs. Dragon Claw movesets; burns through Revives

  • Best moveset requires Community Day move

Shadow Salamence

The absolute top counter, a good Shadow Salamence with Outrage has the highest DPS with no real drop in average TDP, and can definitely help to beat the clock. It's definitely worth dodging to maximize its effectiveness.

Good Counters
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Able to pump out Charged moves fast thanks to Dragon Claw

  • Despite the weakness of Dragon Claw, keeps very high DPS due to outstanding Attack stat

Cons:

  • Currently a very rare Pokemon

Garchomp Garchomp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Very good overall power with high general utility as both a Dragon and Ground type attacker

Cons:

  • Currently a very rare species

  • Doesn't take Solar Beam as well as other dragons

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • High overall performer, capable of very high DPS if energy is managed properly

Cons:

  • Weak to Dragon Claw, and not as viable Vs. Solar Beam when compared to other dragons.
  • Legendary Pokemon, can be expensive to raise.
Dragonite Dragonite
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Very common species, has been around since day 1 and has had its own Community Day
  • Strong overall attacker with high overall performance

Shadow Dragonite

As a shadow, Dragonite's performance is extremely close to Shadow Salamence, trading a little DPS for a bit of TDO by comparison. Definitely a supreme counter!

Chandelure Chandelure
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Good performer with utility as both a Ghost and Fire type attacker, a solid investment.

Cons:

  • Somewhat frail, benefits from dodging
  • Currently a fairly rare species
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Good overall choice, but really shines Vs. Psychic

Cons:

  • Mythic Pokemon, cannot be traded. If you missed its latest release, you won't have one for this raid.
  • Can be expensive to raise
Giratina Origin Forme Pokemon GO Giratina (Origin Forme)
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Great overall performance, hits hard and survives well

Cons:

  • Legendary Pokemon, can be expensive to raise.
Gardevoir Gardevoir
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Situationally good TDO option, resists Psychic Type movesets and one of the few Pokemon that double-resists Dragon Type movesets
  • Fairly common species that has been available in several events and its own Community Day

Cons:

  • Less than stellar performance when against a non-resisted moveset
  • Fairly frail, appreciates dodging

Shadow Gardevoir

Shadow Gardevoir is an overall solid option for this raid. It doesn't have extremely high DPS, and its TDO isn't outstanding outside of select movesets, but it's definitely a reliable choice.

Tyranitar Tyranitar
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
Bite Crunch Best

Pros:

  • Doubly resists Psychic; also pretty bulky vs. Dragon Claw

  • Common tier 4 raid boss; also featured on Community Day

Cons:

  • Poor vs. Solar Beam; one-hit KO’d at and below level 35

  • Generally sub-par performance, best if used for a second team to help flesh out counters or as a moveset-specific anchor

Shadow Tyranitar

While not a top counter by any metric, Shadow Tyranitar's overall performance sees a solid boost, though it's still better served as a backup.

Glass Counters
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • High DPS Vs. Latios

Cons:

  • Very frail; one-hit KO’d by both Psychic and Solar Beam

  • Strongly advised to use sparingly due to awful durability

Tank Counters
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Pros:

  • Top overall TDO among Latios counters with very solid DPS to back it up
  • Absolutely fantastic performance Vs. Solar Beam in particular

Cons:

  • Legendary Pokemon, can be expensive to raise
