PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Fire Spin is the move with STAB and suitable for Magmortar as a Fire specialist.
  • Fire Punch and Fire Blast are very close, with the former being more dodge friendly.
  • Brick Break and Psychic are just not appropriate on Magmortar. TM those.
  • Thunderbolt* and Scorching Sands lack STAB and don't have any use on offense.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Fire Spin is much more damaging than Karate Chop on defense.
  • Brick Break is hard to dodge and is not resisted by Magmortar’s common counters.
  • Fire Punch is stronger than Brick Break and also has 3 bars.
  • Psychic and Scorching Sands have relevant defensive coverage and 2 bars.
  • Fire Blast is not likely to get used at all before Magmortar faints.
  • Thunderbolt* might be useful to hurt Water-type attackers, but that's about it.

PVE Overview

Magmortar does not get Overheat, the superior Fire-type charge move. As a result, it loses to many other Fire-types. Magmortar is definitely serviceable, just not outstanding.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Fire Spin + Fire Punch and Brick Break or Thunderbolt*

Fire Spin benefits from STAB and is a good move overall, while Karate Chop falls behind in both damage output and energy gains.

Fire Punch is Magmortar's primary charge move, as it benefits from STAB while also costing low amounts of energy. Brick Break is a very weak move, but costs the least amount of energy, while also providing Fighting-type coverage. Thunderbolt provides coverage against Magmortar's weakness to Water Pokemon, though it's moderate energy cost makes it more difficult to access before fainting. Scorching Sands can be useful for counter-coverage against Rock Types and can debuff Attack, but it can also be hard to justify its use over other options. Psychic could also be chosen for its typing coverage depending on the format, though it is slower to access as well.

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 1 / 5

Magmortar is a mono-Fire type Pokemon with high offensive stats, which consequently results in poor bulk in Great League. Fire Pokemon generally don't find a lot of success in this league due to ubiquitous use of Water Pokemon, and Magmortar doesn't provide any special niche that helps it stand out amongst other Fire-types like Alolan Marowak. Magmortar's charge moves could also use some upgrading, as they're not particularly efficient either (DPE-wise).

Ultra League: 1.5 / 5

Magmortar's Fire-type coverage can be useful against Bug, Grass, and Fairy Pokemon in Ultra League. However, losses against many meta Pokemon in this league are largely blamed on poor bulk and inefficient movesets. Thunderbolt is likely the preferred coverage move for this league due to common Water-types like Lapras and Empoleon, though it does no favors against Swampert.

Master League: 0 / 5

With a max CP of 3132, Magmortar would appreciate additional stats to help compete against various legendary and pseudo-legendary Pokemon in this league who boast more stats. Steel and Ice Pokemon are the primary targets for Magmortar, with notable advantages against popular Fairy-types like Togekiss, though the matchup against Magnezone can be bait dependent depending on shield usage.
