Finally caught at high IV Dragonite!
Answers
It sure can be caught.
A wild level 1 Dragonite encountered while maxing out bonus gives:
1 - {1 - [4% / (2 * CPM)]}^(2 * 1.5 * 1.7 * 2 * 1.3) = 0.958
It is about 95.8% chance you can catch it.
1 - 0.958 = 0.042
4.2% it will break out the ball.
0.042 * 5% = 0.0021
0.042 - 0.0021 = 0.0399
While 0.21% of fleeing (total chance) and 3.99% keeps.
Seems confusing? Summary data (rounded) gives below:
Catch chance: 95.8%
Flee chance: 0.2%
Keep chance: 4.0%
Ultra Balls and Razz Berries needed: about 1.044 each.
Right before catching this Dragonite, I was gonna write a rant about how difficult it is to catch one and the number of balls and razzberries I go through is ridiculous. Then this Dragonite popped up, 1 razzbery, 1 ultraball straight (not even Nice) and done! Was expecting like at least 20-30 balls since its CP was the highest that I have ever encountered...
But for me even a Golbat and Scyther is hard for me to hit them... Also a Lapras.... The bad thing is Lapras did not flee.. I'm just running out of balls...
It is not more difficult, it just throwing technique, that has to be adjusted to far-away-pokemon. Zubat and Pokeballs are great to practice it. Basically, you have to draw the ball higher on the screen.
3 Dragonites encountered in the wild, max one at 2770CP, all fled, I don't know even how people can catch em, using like 30 ultra balls with berries on them, with curve balls, hitting nice or great at around 90% of the trows that hit on the Dragonite, still all run from me, even the one at 1300CP.
I have even give up on running to try to catch em, I don't even get excited because I know they will run from me, I just take them like a Dratini, I think well a pretty small chance of getting 3 more candies to evolve another Dragonite.
Yes, and also the medals, the last two dragonites fled from me at less than 2k cp and with gold dragon medal, with berry, ultraball, curve and great, I don't think those bonus affect how they should...or I am just unlucky but 3/3 Dragonites fled bothers me a lot, they are rare enough, they should increase the chances of catching them or increase their spawn rate, I wonder what will happen when gen2 fully comes, will be impossible to find one of those rare mons.
I caught a dragonite with CP2938 (my highest), SW/DP as well. Certainly not as sweet as yours; IV is only 67%. I still love it though.
BTW, mine and yours could very well be from the same great great grand father as their CP's are comparable, having the same movesets. Only difference is IV lol.
p.s. It took at least 50/60 ultra/great balls + rasberries and tons of worries that it would flee !
Wow, I have never even seen a wild dragonite.
Best wild catches for me are:
Vaporeon cp 2404 with water gun aquatail
Venusaur cp 2058 with vinewhip solar beam
I nearly got a 2200 Gyarados with dragon breath dragon pulse but he ran. At least my husband got it.
Venusaur was from an incense and vaporeon was just randomly sitting up the street from my house.
Great catch! By the way, DB/HB and DB/DP counts as good attacker dragonites ;) I once caught a 2799cp Dragonite with DB/HB and 82% IV. It needed a good 20 razzberry and at least 30 ultraballs to catch. Where I live, Dragonites spawn daily, while Dratini are rare.
Yesterday I caught 2, one of them spawned while I was hunting a Rhyhorn, and the other one spawned in my living room right before I went to bed. Unfortunately most of the Dragonites I catch have sub 50% IVs, but I did catch a lvl 14 with 96% IVs which I've powered up to lvl 30. Four other Dragonites caught at lvl 25+ make up the rest of my top5 mons.
I used to have a huge problem catching or even throwing far enough to hit these, as they are so far away and have a low catch rate. I have however found that throwing an L-throw curveball almost straight up, will usually hit the Dragonite, and sometimes get me a Great throw. Most are caught after 3-8 great throws.
